It’s integral to be invested in the success of our local youth. FMTC proudly supports our youth at the Payette County Fair during the market sale and by sponsoring animal awards. This year, FMTC General Manager, Ron Rembelski, purchased the Grand Champion 4-H steer from Tinley Thomas, who we applaud for her outstanding work and commitment. We also wish to thank our supporting partners, Baker Tilly, Vantage Point Solutions and Forvis Mazars, whose contributions were instrumental in making this purchase possible.

Digital Boundaries

Have you considered implementing digital boundaries? In the last 30 days, how many times have you had the TV on, laptop or tablet open, and been scrolling on your phone at the same time? In this data-driven, digitally connected world, it’s nearly impossible to disconnect completely, but finding ways to balance your digital and analog lives is critical to your well-being. While “digital wellness” sounds like a buzzword, there are some small changes you can make to ensure your devices are working for you while giving yourself the breaks you need.

 

The overarching solution is to create boundaries that make sustaining attention easier. Instead of trying to eliminate technology, build periods into your day when you decide what deserves your attention. Allow those moments to get your WHOLE attention without giving yourself easy opportunities to switch focus. And, when you feel the temptation to open a new tab, grab another device, or multitask, consciously stick with what you’re doing.

 

A few more practical steps to establish digital wellness habits:

 

  1. Use technology with a purpose. Before opening an app, think “Why am I opening this app right now?” If you can’t answer positively, don’t open it.
  2. Schedule distraction-free periods. Start with 25 minutes of focused attention and gradually increase the “time box” to longer blocks for more demanding work.
  3. Have analog mornings. Avoid checking messages, emails, or the news for a short period after waking. Ideally, get some actual sunlight before you unlock your screens.
  4. Organize your digital environment. Group apps by purpose and remove feeds or tools that regularly pull you into timewasting or mindless scrolling.
  5. Batch notifications. Set time aside to respond to emails and work messages rather than stopping good progress to reply immediately.

 

The goal of digital wellness is to use technology intentionally so that your devices serve your goals rather than serving to distract you. When you feel the urge to jump ship to a new tab/app/device, take a breath, get some sun, and refocus.

How to create a smart home

Remember the life of ease homeowners of the future George and Judy Jetson enjoyed? Or the Black and Decker Hydrator in BACK TO THE FUTURE II that transforms a tiny pellet into a full-size pizza in seconds? Ahhh, the promise of a fully-automated home we’ve all dreamed of, right?

The realities of most “smart home” automation have been both exciting and a little patchy. So, how can you get more from your smart home? 

Step 1: Figure out your pain points. Is your power bill sky high because everyone leaves the lights on at night? Are you spending too much on coffee out because your morning routine is so crazy you don’t have time to make coffee at home? Identify your needs first.

Step 2: Evaluate automation features. In an article in TechTimes about home automation, experts argue that any automation should tick these four boxes: It must be practical, consistent, customizable, and it should allow integration across multiple platforms and brands.

Step 3: Group automation efforts into categories. Instead of attacking issues one by one, create overarching solutions. Want to bolster security? Coordinate locking doors, turning on security, and lighting the backyard before bed. Want a more soothing morning experience? Program the house to gradually bring up the lights and shades as you wake, start the coffee brewing, and adjust the thermostat.

Step 4: Reassess. Are you feeling more refreshed with your morning routine? Are your kids enjoying the convenience of the front door unlocking automatically (and you no longer yelling at them about turning the lights off)? Are your movie nights more epic now that your lighting, killer sound, and incredible TV picture are all working in concert? If not, recheck your priorities and tweak your settings. (Since automation is also designed to conserve energy—adjusting temperature and lighting in an empty house, putting appliances in sleep mode when not in use—you should also check your power bill periodically to have numbers to brag about!)

High tech solutions can seem daunting, but worse, they can seem cold and overly invasive when used in the wrong way. When it comes down to building a smart home system that fits your family, the goal shouldn’t be to control more technology but rather to let your fancy tech fade into the background. This should look like enjoying life more, not using tech more.

Equipment Upgrade

Farmers Mutual Telephone Company is currently in the process of upgrading the Fiber Optic Equipment within Fruitland and NuAcres. This process comes at no cost to you and ensures that you can continue to receive the most technologically advanced service, including multi-gigabit speeds, which will be available later this year. 

Technicians from FMTC will be visiting homes to upgrade the outdoor equipment that delivers your Internet service. The process is quick, and they will only need access to the fiber optic equipment located on the exterior of your home.

The 2025 Malheur County & Payette County Fair and Rodeos are in the books, and we had a great time visiting with those in our local communities! We hope you were able to stop by our booth at one or both of the fairs to say hello and learn more about our fiber optic expansion in Idaho and Oregon.
